At Fusion, we love graduation. It’s a time to celebrate all the hard work our students have put in to get to this special day. Each graduation is a completely unique ceremony with speeches by students, teachers, and staff. It’s a time to reflect and tell stories, and to highlight the strides the students have made in academics, and their social and emotional well being.
But wait…why are we talking about graduation in early December? Well, Fusion Academy Oak Brook just had their very first graduate! Students can start any time of the year, and sometimes our students finish their programs at non-traditional times. Oak Brook was able to have a very special graduation ceremony for one student on Tuesday, November 29th.
Here’s a note from Jackson’s mom, Paula Mitchell:
“I was referred to Fusion Academy Oak Brook by an educational consultant. The timing could not have been more perfect for my family. Public and private schools had never been a good match for my son. I felt frustrated and overwhelmed by the traditional educational systems. My son is not a typical student, but very bright. He and I were both encouraged by the team, from our very first meeting together. It all felt like another leap of faith in his educational journey, but we had hope that the staff understood what he needed.
When he began classes, he slowly became inspired. He discovered that he could learn at his own pace and level of instruction. He was sufficiently challenged in academics, but also in the areas of wellness and basic life skills. He actually enjoyed going to school. At Fusion, he was able to showcase his talents and leadership skills in some really creative and fun ways. Then all of a sudden, he began to achieve and reach for more goals. He will graduate from Fusion Academy Oak Brook, this week. He has worked hard at his education and I am so happy for him!
What we discovered at Fusion, what made it so “revolutionary” for my family was their openness to seeing (and doing) education differently for non-traditional and unique learners. We found that Fusion was interested in seeing their students become successful in an academic setting: in a way that was individual, creative, authentic and very supportive. The teachers challenged their students to find their own strengths, while the students learned to trust in the process and achieve their own greatness. Communication between teachers, the support staff, my son and myself was open and consistent – with no surprises to navigate through. Pretty revolutionary, in my opinion.
I found this quote to be true after hearing similar testimonies from parents, students and staff during their recent Grand Opening celebration, I think it sums up (in a way), Fusion’s philosophy:
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” —Albert Einstein”
We love hearing stories of how Fusion’s customized approach truly does change lives. Thank you, Paula, for sharing your words, and congratulations again to Jackson!
