I am a huge fan of winter. I love cool weather, sweaters, and hot chocolate. More than anything else, I love October. October signals the start of holidays, and it reminds me that I have 31 days to figure out what story I will tell during National Novel Writing Month, aka NaNoWriMo. Every November, writers around the world work toward creating a 50,000 word novel in one month. (Learn more about NaNoWriMo, and sign up to participate, here.) This is my tenth year doing NaNoWriMo and I’m really optimistic that I’ll reach my lofty goal. I believe that I can and will write 50,000 words. But more importantly, I think my students can set their own lofty goals and meet them.

I am thrilled to implement the Young Writers’ Program at Fusion Los Gatos. I can now bring my passion for creativity and storytelling to my students. I can show them their voices matter and that what they have to say is important and interesting. You see, I’m not the only person writing a novel this November. In October, I broke the news to all my English students that they too would join me on this marathon/adventure. In fact, I invited all of the students to participate and several of them jumped at the opportunity.

I spent a large portion of October preparing for the adventure. I decorated my classroom with inspiring posters and had special pins delivered from NaNoWriMo organization. I helped my students figure out their characters and their plots. We set goals. Truly ambitious goals. All told, the whole school plans to write a cumulative 233,500 words in 30 days. The best part is I know we can do it.

I look forward to sharing the adventure with not just my Los Gatos students but with all of Fusion. Because if one campus can write ten stories, imagine the stories our entire nationwide Fusion Family can write if only we believed we could. I believe in you and welcome you to join us at any time in the month. For now, I leave with you a peek into my classroom. Feel free to ask any questions and I promise we’ll get back to you.

All the Best,

Debby Jensen is a passionate educator and is honored to join Fusion Los Gatos as an ELA (English-Language Arts) teacher and mentor. After a long journey, she graduated from Florida International University in Miami, Florida with a Bachelor degree in Liberal Studies. Upon graduation, she spent time working in a one-on-one and small group instruction private school teaching English and Social Studies. In 2016, she relocated to California to pursue an opportunity at a new education start-up. When she isn’t teaching students, she gets creative with her sewing machine, pottery wheel, or paper and pencil. If you can’t find her creating, look for her in the local yoga studio or on a running trail. Debby has completed four (terrible) novels. She participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and wrote over 50,000 words in 30 days. Maybe someday she’ll apply those editing skills she loves to teach!
